SIENNA REID | SIENNA REID ~ PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS | Rampage

This series of nine oil paintings on canvas was completed in Rome in the fall of 2000 for a show at the Fondazione Culturale Italo-Svedese (now the Gianfranco Gorini Venice Printmaking Studio) in Venice, curated by the foundation's president, Gianfranco Gorini.
The paintings were inspired by the dramatic charisma of characters in "The Orestes" such as Cassandra the accursed seer, Thyestes, one of the earliest characters in the long and tragic story, and the three avenging furies ; Alecto (unresting) , Megaera (jealousy) , and Tisiphone (avenger). The other portraits are of various deities and figures from the Classical myths; Venus, Priapus, Tempestates, and the Minotaur. I chose each of these personalities for their representation of the chaos of human emotions: jealousy, love, lust, betrayal and revenge.
Using photographs I have taken of friends, I worked to materialize portraits of intense emotion framed in a tight physical space; a stage-like setting in vibrant and subtle colors. This series also serves as a development of a cast of characters for a series of larger paintings titled "Tempesta", with theatrically inspired settings in which the characters are enacting the dramas of emotions which sway us all in our lives and have inspired artists for millennia on the stage of life.
