SIENNA REID | SIENNA REID ~ PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS | Murals
These large paintings in acrylic on un-stretched canvas were for a show at one of my favorite clubs the Re-Bar, in Seattle. My friend, owner Steve Wells gave me the chance to exhibit in his and Pits' club the Re-Bar in 1996 . The space is large and dark and normally full of gyrating bodies. I believed it called for something dramatic to fill it up. PJ Harvey's song 'Fifty Foot Queenie' gave me the inspiration to do a painting of a corseted woman on a canvas 10 feet by 8 feet tall. The other canvas flirts with images of women throughout history and the changes that fashion has hoisted upon us. The contrast between flesh and constraint interests me in these. The pastels helped to bring out the paintings in the large dark club. The paintings had the secondary effect of performing as the set for one in a series of plays put on at the Re-Bar.
