SIENNA REID | SIENNA REID ~ PAINTINGS AND DRAWINGS | Figurative

Painting portraits is one of my favorite things in the world to do. I love to do them from live sittings or from photographs. In my portraiture I work to capture and realize in the form of paint, an impression that shows the power and dynamic quality of the physical form coupled with the emotional life of the human being. During a live portrait I see infinite expressions transverse the face and body, and that coupled with a changing light work together to make the record of a painting like a film of the living being. Because I like to speak with the people I paint, I also see emotion and feelings transform the surface of the skin itself as it becomes hotter, colder, agitated or calm. Even the physical difficulty which the sitter faces while holding their position ends up adding a crucial element to the portrait. The passage of time caught in a portrait is important as we are able to look at portraits from other ages dating back millenia, the only record of times long past. These paintings are also about paint itself, a miraculous substance that mimics the human body with its skin-like layers, translucence, and opacity. I love oil paint and the history of its ability to portray the complex world around us through the eyes of the artist.
