The photos in this section are all details of larger paintings featured in other sections. The detail can bring forth the subtleties in paintings not readily visible when looking at reproductions of work and I think they can also help bring forth a truer sense of the depth and texture found within the paintings themselves. Reproductions never really tell you what a painting is like- they are only a shadow of the real tangible thing. That is why a painting is so valuable, as a one of a kind object which creates an experience on a visual and tactile level. Yet we are so used to reproductions as giving us a valid experience- we have accepted them as a substitute for the real thing and our technology in photography has become so powerful that we can come close to creating a sensation of experiencing the real thing.
